How difficult is the Hampta Pass Trek?
The Hampta Pass trek — a beautiful crossover journey that begins in the heart of Manali, is one of the most sought-after monsoon treks in India, it welcomes thousands of trekkers every year. But what sets it apart is the perfect harmony of raw terrain, alpine magic, and personal challenge.
Though beginner-friendly, don’t mistake it for easy. This trek demands preparation — physically, mentally and emotionally. It’s a trail that will test your will and reward your soul.
Let’s walk you through this experience – Day by Day.
Day 1: Manali to Chika (Altitude: ~3100 m)
The journey begins at approximately 2100 meters above sea level in Manali. From here, we drive to Jobra which is the last motorable point. The trek to Chika is short and easy, just 2.5 km and it marks the beginning of an unforgettable adventure.
The trail winds through dense pine forests, gently ascending into open meadows. Rivers humming beside you, and wildflowers brush against your boots. As you hike alongside the river, the view ahead fills your heart with a childlike joy. By evening, you arrive at the Chika campsite, embraced by nature and the whispers of flowing water. This day you rest at the camp site and prepare for the journey ahead.
Day 2: Chika to Balu Ka Ghera (~3800 m)
Today, the challenges begin to reveal themselves.
The trail to Balu Ka Ghera is longer — around 5-6 hours. A mix of rocky terrain, a chilling river crossing, and a boulder patch awaits. The icy water during the river crossing numbs your feet, but our experienced trek leaders — trained from NIM and HMI — guide you safely across.
As you push forward, the trail opens up again to meadows stretching endlessly, framed by mountains peaks. And then, you arrive — at one of the most surreal campsites in the Himalayas: Balu Ka Ghera. Take time to acclimatize well as it is a high altitude camp site. Drink enough water and stay hydrated.
Day 3: Summit Day — Balu Ka Ghera to Hampta Pass (~4300 m) to Shea Goru
This is THE DAY.
We start early, around 6 AM. Packed lunch in our bags. A steep ascent begins — through snowfields and ridgelines — leading to the Hampta Pass, standing tall at approx. 4300 meters. The day is long and challenging. It will test your will.
It takes 3–4 hours to reach the summit. Every breath gets heavier. Every step, slower. But then — you reach the top. Wind howls across the pass, and a vast otherworldly valley opens before you. You’ve done it.
Yet, the descent to Shea Goru is no less challenging — steep, slippery, and hard on the knees. But the sense of accomplishment is unmatched. Be cautious with each step as the descend is tricky. Tonight, you sleep under the stars at Shea Goru. Relax and relive the moments of the successful summit.
Day 4: Shea Goru to Chatru + Drive to Chandratal (~4250 m)
Today, we descend down to Chatru. It’s an easier trail.Sometimes, due to rain, the river level can rise and make crossing a little harder. But again, our team ensures you pass safely.
As you walk through the wildflowers blooming in the meadows, you realize — it’s not just about reaching the destination. It’s about embracing the path.
Once at Chatru, you’ll enjoy a warm meal and then prepare for the drive to Chandratal — the moon lake, resting high at 4250 meters. The road is bumpy, but the reward? is Unreal. A high-altitude lake shimmering under the Himalayan sky — it is nature’s final gift to your journey.
After soaking in its beauty, we return to Chatru for the night.
