Best Time to do the Pangarchulla Trek

Pangarchulla is a non technical peak situated in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand which rises up to 4600 m above sea level. It is an ideal summit for adventure lovers and enthusiastic trekkers. The trek to Pangarchulla is not easy. It requires preparation and right guidance to successfully scale this peak. Due to the high altitude and the terrain of the trek the peak is scalable only for a very short window. As it is a very popular trek, lot of trekkers are misguided by many organisations which leads to higher risks and unsuccessful summit attempts. One thing that most of the trekkers don’t realise is that you cannot do this trek throughout the year.

In this video we will give you an insight about the right time to attempt the summit of this trek.

  1. Monsoon(June to Aug): It is a strict no to attempt to do this trek as the weather is not favorable.
  2. Post monsoon(Sept to Nov): A lot of trekkers enquire about this trek from Sept to Nov. As per our recommendation it is not an ideal time to do this trek as there is no snow and there are a lot of boulders on the way to the summit which can lead to serious injuries. The summit in these months is difficult and risky.
  3. Winter(Dec to Feb): There is a rise in number of trekkers who wish to attempt this trek in peak winter months but it is often seen only 5% of trekkers attempting this peak in winters reach to the summit rest others are taken to adjacent peak called mini Pangarchula and are misled by organisations. The chances of failure to scale the peak during these months is very high because of unstable snow conditions and harsh temperatures.
  4. Spring( March and April): The month of March and April are considered best to scale the Pangarchulla peak. It is often known as the golden window for the summit push. By this time all the snow from the winter months has settled down. The boulders are under snow so it is very easy to cut a trail over the snow laden boulders making it easier to climb. Adequate snow, stable trails and weather conditions make the chances of successful summit fairly high. This is the time when you can scale the peak and enjoy the 360 degree Himalayan views as the skies are also clear. The temperature is not very harsh like in winters making it more favourable for trekkers. We recommend this time as the best time to do the Pangarchulla trek as all conditions are favorable.

Adventure does involve certain risks but when planned correctly those risks can be mitigated that is why it is very important to choose your trek as per the geography and terrain conditions. Each trek has a dedicated time to visit and should be planned accordingly.
