The Valley of flowers shows it’s full magic during the monsoon season. The mountains are lush green, waterfalls flows in full force and hundred’s of colorful flowers blooms across the meadows. It is the time when the valley truly comes alive and looks like a paradise hidden in the Himalayas.
But July and August are also the time of year when it rains often, temperatures drop and weather changes. Therefore it is essential to know the weather conditions that can be expected at Joshimath, Ghangaria, Valley of Flowers and Hemkund Sahib before planning a trek. Weather & Temperature at the Campsites
Joshimath
Day Temperature: 18°C to 23°C
Night Temperature: 10°C to 15°C
Altitude: 1890 m
During June, Joshimath feels quite warm and sunny. But once July and August hit, the heavy monsoon clouds completely block out the sun, bringing the temperature down. The days become much cooler, usually staying between 18°C and 23°C. At night, it cools down even more, dropping to around 10°C to 15°C, so you should definitely carry a proper thermal or a padded jacket with yourself.
Ghangaria:
Day Temperature: 12°C to 16°C
Night Temperature: 4°C to 10°C
Altitude: 3049 m
Ghangaria, being at a higher altitude of 3049 m, feels cooler and much wetter during July and August. Daytime temperatures usually stay between 12°C and 16°C, which is comfortable for trekking. However, nights can become cold, with temperatures dropping to around 4°C to 10°C. Since rain is very common during these months, carrying a waterproof jacket, rain cover for your backpack, and extra dry clothes is essential.

Day Time Temperature: 12°C to 17°C
During July and August, the Valley of Flowers remains pleasantly cool throughout the day. One moment you may be walking under bright sunshine, and the next moment clouds and mist can roll in, making the surroundings feel much cooler. While the temperature generally stays between 12°C and 17°C, it can feel colder because of the rain, and strong mountain winds.. A fleece, padded and waterproof jacket are highly recommended, even during the daytime.
- Temperature at Hemkund Sahib
Day Time Temperature: 7°C to 12°C
The daytime temperature at Hemkund Sahib usually stays between 7°C to 12°C. The trek to Hemkund Sahib is steep and physically demanding, so you may feel warm while climbing. But once you reach the lake and gurudwara, the cold winds blowing across the mountains can make the weather feel quite chilly.
FYI: You do not need to worry about the night temperature of Valley of Flowers and Hemkund Sahib. Both places can only be visited during the day, and overnight stay is not allowed there. Trekkers visit these locations in the morning and return to Ghangaria before evening. That is why knowing the daytime temperature is enough while planning your trek.
