Top 3 Popular Sahyadri Treks to do this Monsoon

Being an experienced trekker who has been trekking in the Sahyadri ranges across the year, I can firmly say that monsoon season is the most happening season for these hills! Harishchandragad, Andharban, and Kalsubai are usually 120-180 km from both Pune and Mumbai. Hence, most of the trekkers can get to the place through either private tempo/ local trains to Kasara/Igatpuri followed by a jeep ride. If you are up for any of these popular Sahyadri treks in the monsoon, pack your raincoat and waterproof shoes, and read this quick guide. Here is the account of these must-visit monsoon Sahyadri treks for you.

Why is Monsoon Season the Best Time to Explore Sahyadri Treks?

I have gone walking in these hills during summer and even in the winter fog. However, I can assure you that nothing is better than the beauty of nature you witness while trekking in the Sahyadris during the monsoons. One particular thing that stands out during my last trekking experience in the monsoon season was being on a ridge with clouds pouring from the top edge of it like a waterfall. And that is one experience you won’t have during any other time of the year!Monsoon definitely helps keep things cool, making steep ascents easy to handle. However, the only drawback is that the trails become wet and rivers often flood. This means you will have to come with much more preparation. This is why the following are the three monsoon treks in the Sahyadri range that I would recommend this season. All of these treks are conducted regularly by TrekPanda from Pune and Mumbai, which I prefer mostly for my trekking adventures.

Harishchandragad Trek: Konkan Kada, Kedareshwar Cave and the Fort’s History

Harishchandragad Trek was my introduction to Sahyadri treks. This is an ancient fort located in the Ahmednagar district, and the history in itself is enough to attract trekkers here. The carvings at this place were made during medieval times and influenced Shaiva, Shakta, and Naath sects. The Mughals controlled this fort initially, but it passed into the control of the Marathas in 1747.Trekkers mostly go to the Konkan Kada cliff and the historical fort here. Key attractions on the trek:
  • Kedareshwar Cave: a shivling standing in waist-deep water, surrounded by four stone pillars (only one remains fully intact)
  • Konkan Kada: the iconic cliff, the best time to visit it is early morning
  • Harishchandreshwar Temple: dedicated to Lord Shiva
  • Taramati Peak: The highest point on the plateau

Which Harishchandragad Route Is Best? Pachnai, Khireshwar or Nalichi Vaat

Well, people ask me this question very often. So, here’s my honest breakdown after completing all three of these popular Sahyadri treks:
RouteDifficultyApprox. TimeBest For
PachnaiEasy3 hours uphillBeginners, families, first-timers
KhireshwarModerate5–6 hoursTrekkers wanting temple views + a moderate challenge
Nalichi VaatDifficult6–7 hours, includes rock patches and a chimney climbExperienced trekkers only; avoid in heavy rain
If it’s your first time, take Pachnai, as it’s the shortest and most straightforward route, and you still get to see everything on top. But I would suggest staying clear of Nalichi Vaat during peak monsoon.

Andharban Trek: Dense Forests, Misty Valleys and Hidden Monsoon Waterfalls

Andharban trek is all about intimacy with the forest. The name literally translates to “dark forest,” and during the monsoon, it earns that name. Thick canopy, ferns growing on every rock, and streams crossing the trail every few hundred metres.

What Makes Andharban One of Maharashtra’s Best Jungle Treks?

The Andharban trek in Sahyadri is truly one of the most scenic treks. This trek will lead you from the Sahyadri Ghat to the Konkan side.

  • It’s largely a descent, so it’s accessible even for people newer to trekking
  • The forest cover means you’re shielded from direct rain for most of the walk
  • You’ll cross several monsoon-only waterfalls and water crossings, which will add to your adventure

But remember, leech socks are genuinely useful here, more than on any other Sahyadri trail. The trek ends near the Konkan, so the environment is different from the usual ghat treks

Kalsubai Trek: The Highest Peak of Maharashtra with Bhandardara and AMK Forts View

Kalsubai is known as the “Everest of Maharashtra”. This is because it is the highest peak in Maharashtra. It is almost 1,646 metres high, and it is definitely worth visiting. You will see that the all of the Bhandardara area will open in front of you.The trail begins from Bari village and takes you up through a mix of ladders, iron railings, and rocky patches. It’s steeper than it looks on paper. On a clear monsoon morning, you can spot the AMK forts in Maharashtra, Alang, Madan and Kulang, along with Ratangad in the distance. However, clouds often swallow the view within minutes, which is half the charm. I remember reaching the top drenched, cold, and completely out of breath, only for the clouds to part for maybe ninety seconds and reveal the whole Bhandardara valley. That view is worth every step!!

Sunrise at Kalsubai Peak: Why Every Season Offers a Different Experience

A sunrise at Kalsubai during monsoon cannot be compared to that in the winter season. The view is clear and unobstructed in winter, but in the monsoon, the sunrise is all about clouds opening up to give you little glimpses of the valley and closing again. The views here in monsoons, in my opinion, are more dramatic, despite not being as “postcard perfect” because of the surprises that the mountain keeps throwing at you every few minutes.

Places to Visit near Harishchandragad, Andharban and Kalsubai

Sites to Visit in Harishchandragad, Andharban, and KalsubaiIrrespective of which of these 3 most visited treks in Sahayadris you decide to make, you should think ahead about places of interest you would like to visit. All of these treks have their places to see, and here I give some names that should not be missed.
  • Bhandardara Lake and Wilson Dam: Drive from Kalsubai base camp and extremely picturesque during the monsoon due to the water overflow of the dam
  • Ratangad Fort: For those trekkers who are ready for a second ascent in the area
  • Malshej Ghat: Famous for flamingos and waterfalls, close to the Harishchandragad approach
  • Pimpalgaon Joge Dam and backwaters: near the Andharban route towards Konkan

Base Villages That Lead to These Treks: Rajur, Bhandardara, Pimpri, and Khireshwar

All three of these trek trails start from base villages like Rajur, Pimpri, Bhandardara, etc. And to be honest, these are as much a part of the experience as anything else. Rajur and Bhandardara form the starting point of the Kalsubai trek with modest lodging facilities and home-cooked Maharashtrian food.Khireshwar and Pachnai are the main base villages for Harishchandragad. Pimpri, on the Andharban side, is a quieter forest-edge village. I’ve had some of the best home-cooked pithla-bhakri here after a long, muddy descent.

Monsoon Trek Packing List: What Should You Carry for a Safe Trek?

From my experience, this is what actually matters:
  • A good quality raincoat along with an umbrella
  • Quick-dry trekking shoes
  • A dry bag or multiple ziplock bags for your phone and wallet
  • Leech socks, particularly for Andharban
  • Headlamp or torch with extra batteries
  • Enough water and snacks that you can carry
  • First aid kit
  • Extra clothing

Comparing Harishchandragad, Andharban, and Kalsubai: Difficulty, Distance, and Experience

The ultimate comparison between these three Sahyadri treks will be incomplete without measuring these three treks side by side. So, compare them using this quick table;

Common Monsoon Trekking Mistakes Every Beginner Should Avoid

If you are going for monsoon trekking for the first time, there are some rules to consider. TrekPanda team helped me when I was a beginner. Here is a list of things to avoid;
  • Using cotton clothes that remain wet and heavy for hours
  • Missing out on breakfast before the trek in the morning
  • Trekking alone or straying from the marked trail in fog
  • Ignoring local guidance on when to turn back (remember: Sahyadri weather changes fast)
  • Packing too much gear

Which Sahyadri Monsoon Trek Should You Choose This Season?

If you have already done some trekking and need to take up a challenge that will yield great results, choose Kalsubai this monsoon. All three of these treks are, indeed, some of the finest Sahyadri treks to embark on when it rains, and each has a unique flavour of the Western Ghats.

Conclusion

Monsoon brings a magical beauty to the Sahyadris. From misty cliffs to waterfalls to lush forests. No matter which paths you choose, ensure that you prepare well and get along with a person well-versed in the area. Therefore, booking your monsoon trek with TrekPanda may be the best idea.
