The Buran Ghati Trek is one of the most beautiful high-altitude treks in Himachal Pradesh. Known for its dense forests, green meadows, alpine lakes, snow-covered trails, and the thrilling Buran Pass crossing, this trek offers a perfect combination of adventure and scenic beauty.

Talking abotit’s difficulty level, the Buran Ghati Trek is considered as a moderate to difficult trek. It is suitable for trekkers with good fitness levels and some previous trekking experience. Beginners can also complete this trek if they prepare properly and build enough stamina before starting the trek.

Day-by-Day Difficulty Level of Buran Ghati Trek

Day 1: Shimla to Janglik

Distance: Long mountain drive
Duration: 8–9 hours
Altitude:Janglik (9,200 ft)
Difficulty Level: Easy

The journey begins with a scenic drive from Shimla to Janglik village. There is no trekking involved on this day, but the long mountain road can feel tiring.

Day 2: Janglik to Dayara Thach

Trek Distance: 6–7 km
Trek Duration: 5–6 hours
Altitude: Janglik (9,200 ft) → Dayara Thach (11,150 ft)
Altitude Gain: Around 1,950 ft
Difficulty Level: Moderate

The first trekking day starts with a gradual climb towards Dayara Thach. The trail passes through traditional villages, dense forests, and beautiful Himalayan landscapes.

Although the distance is not very long, the continuous ascent makes this day moderately challenging. Since it is the first day of trekking, your body takes time to adjust to the altitude and walking pattern.

Day 3: Dayara Thach to Litham Thach

Trek Distance: 4–5 km
Trek Duration: 3–4 hours
Altitude: Dayara Thach (11,150 ft) → Litham Thach (11,800 ft)
Altitude Gain: Around 650 ft
Difficulty Level: Easy

This is a shorter and more comfortable trekking day. The trail takes you through thick forests, flowing streams, and beautiful green meadows.The gradual climb makes it easier compared to previous days, allowing trekkers to enjoy the natural beauty around them.Crossing the Chandranahan stream is one of the memorable experiences of this trek.

Day 4: Chandranahan Lake Excursion

The Chandranahan Lake excursion is an important acclimatization day of the trek. The trail takes you towards the beautiful glacial lake surrounded by snow-covered peaks and rocky landscapes.The climb to the lake involves a gradual ascent, and the increasing altitude makes breathing slightly difficult. However, the short distance allows trekkers to enjoy the journey without rushing.

Day 5: Litham Thach to Dunda

The trail from Litham Thach to Dunda takes trekkers closer to the Buran Ghati Pass. The route includes a climb towards higher altitude camps.The trek starts towards Nalabansh at around 13,000 ft, followed by a climb to reach Dunda campsite.

Day 6: Dunda to Munirang via Buran Ghati Pass

Trek Duration: 10–11 hours
Altitude: Dunda (13,100 ft) → Buran Ghati Pass (15,000 ft) → Munirang
Altitude Gain: Around 1,900 ft
Difficulty Level:Moderate to Difficult

This is the toughest and most adventurous day of the entire Buran Ghati Trek.The day begins with an early morning climb towards Buran Ghati Pass. The trail involves steep sections, snow-covered patches, and a challenging ascent to reach the pass at around 15,000 ft.

This long trekking day requires:

  • Good physical fitness
  • Strong endurance
  • Mental determination
  • Proper pacing
  • Confidence while walking on snow sections

Day 7: Munirang to Barua and Drive Back to Shimla

Difficulty Level: Easy to Moderate

The final day offers one of the most diverse landscapes of the trek. The trail gradually descends through changing scenery, from high-altitude terrain to greener valleys.After reaching Barua, trekkers continue their journey by vehicle towards better road connections for the return drive to Shimla.Although the trekking difficulty reduces, the long travel time can make the day tiring.

Is Buran Ghati Trek Suitable for Beginners?

The Buran Ghati Trek is not an easy beginner trek because of its high altitude, long trekking hours, and challenging Buran Pass crossing. However, beginners with good fitness and proper preparation can successfully complete it.

Before attempting this trek, prepare for at least 6–8 weeks by focusing on:

  • Running or brisk walking
  • Stair climbing
  • Cycling
  • Squats and lunges
  • Core strengthening exercises
  • Long-distance walking practice
