The trek begins with a 200 Km drive from Dehradun to Sankri, now this being a hill side ride throughout, if you are travellingfrom a long distance, it is advisable to get a proper rest in Dehradun itself on day 1 and get your body relaxed and strengthen to get it completely fresh for the challenge of the trek ahead. It’s a scenic ride, and sets the stage for your trek ahead.
The hike from Sankri to Juda ka Talaab takes around 5 hours and covers approx. 4km. You will be gaining an altitude of 2200 ftapprox. in 4 km. The trek to Juda ka Talaab is steep throughout. Though first 500 meters could be more demanding, as you would be starting fresh, the sudden inclination might be hard on your knees and make you struggle to catch your breath with every step, but you’ll get accustomed to it as you go down the line and find yourself comfortable with the vibes around of the environment. Then you may take the lunch and enjoy some well-deserved rest.
This day is counted as one of the lighter days of the trek as you trek towards base camp on snow-covered trails. The trek to Kedarkantha base camp is of just 2.5 to 3 Km and takes around couple of hours. Here you will be gaining an altitude of around 1100 ft in approx. 2.5 Km. This trail is comparatively easy, the first 1 to 1.5km is steep and you will be gaining most of the altitude in this initial 1 km. Summit day is the Ultimate test. You will start in the dark and it might be the coldest night of your life with temperatures plunging below zero up to -15 degrees. The trek from base camp to the summit is around 4 km and you will gain an altitude of around 2200 ft in these 4 Km. The first 3 km is a gradual ascend but the last 1 Km when you will be walking around the ridge will test you mentally as well as physically. The climb to the summit along the ridge will give you a feeling of climbing a grand Himalayan Peak. The steep slopes will challenge you, but the breathtaking sunrise and panoramic views from the top make every struggle worth it, after the summit you will descend down for 5km to Hargaon campsite making it a long tiring but the most memorable and adventurous day of your life.
This day belongs to descending back to Sankri from Hargaon campsite. Though this day is less tricky but can be hard on your knees as you will have to pass through the sections of mud and black ice, if you are not careful then you are definitely inviting yourself to an unwanted injury, so be cautious and watch out your every single step while descending.
