The Valley of Flowers Trek Itinerary: A Complete 6 Day Guide

There are places you go to take pictures, and then there are places that make you drop your camera entirely just to stare. The Valley of Flowers is one of those places. Tucked away high in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, this UNESCO World Heritage Site isn’t just a trekking trail, it’s a living, breathing canvas of alpine blooms, mist covered peaks, and glacial streams. If you want to experience this yourself, then understanding the actual Valley of Flowers itinerary is the secret to making it happen. While this UNESCO World Heritage Site is famous for its dreamlike landscapes, the ground reality of the journey comes down to your stamina and how many kilometers you cover each day.

To help you pace your steps and  manage your energy, here is a  detailed breakdown of the entire six day trail distance from the scenic drives to the steep mountain steps.

The Day by Day Breakdown

Day 1: Dehradun / Rishikesh to Govindghat/ Joshimath.

Drive Distance: 255 km

Drive Duration: 11–12 hours

Your journey to The Valley of Flowers begins early in the morning. Overnight trains and luxury buses connect Delhi to Rishikesh and Dehradun smoothly. The morning pickup happens at 7:00 AM from Dehradun and 8:15 AM from Rishikesh.

If you are planning to arrive by air, Dehradun’s Jolly Grant Airport is actually located significantly closer to Rishikesh. To save yourself unnecessary transit time, choose Rishikesh as your designated pickup location.

The drive is long and demands patience, but the changing landscapes keep you glued to the window. As you wind along the mountain highways, you will witness Devprayag, the holy confluence where the turquoise Alaknanda River meets the fierce Bhagirathi River to officially form the Ganges. You will reached Joshimath or Govindghat by evening. Check into your hotel, relax, and get a good night’s rest before the trekking adventure begins.

Day 2: Govindghat/Joshimath to Ghangaria via Poolna

 Trek Distance: 10 km

 Trek Duration: 5–6 hours

 Altitude Gain: 1,312 m

On Day , after breakfast, a short 4 km vehicle ride moves you from your hotel to Poolna, where the road ends and the foot trail begins. This day marks your first proper mountain ascent. The 10 km trail is a steady, continuous uphill climb that runs alongside the mesmerizing Pushpawati River. The path is welldefined and stonepaved, taking roughly 3.5 to 4 hours of active walking to navigate. Take your time to acclimatize as the air begins to thin. By afternoon, you will cross the threshold into Ghangaria, a bustling highaltitude hamlet that serves as your base camp for the next two days.

Day 3: Ghangaria  to Valley of Flowers and back

Trek Distance: 4 km to 8 km (One way) | 8 km to 16 km (Total Round Trip)

 Trek Duration: 10 hours

 Altitude Gain: 609 m

This is the day you have been waiting for. You will enter the breathtaking Valley Of Flowers , UNESCO protected wonderland filled with hundreds of species of wild, endemic mountain flowers. From your accommodation in Ghangaria, the walk to the Valley of Flowers entrance is 4 km. Once you clear the checkpoint and step into the actual valley, the path opens up. You can choose to walk an additional 4 km deep into the alpine meadows to reach the iconic River Bed Point. Depending on how far your legs are willing to take you, the oneway distance varies between 4 km and 8 km, making your total roundtrip trekking day anywhere from 8 km to  16 km.

The Timing Rule: To protect the fragile alpine ecosystem, the Forest Department enforces a strict curfew. All trekkers must completely exit the gates and return to Ghangaria by 4:30 PM. Because of this, security rangers will not let you move forward past 1:30 PM. Wherever you are on the trail when that clock strikes 1:30, you must turn around and head back.

Day 4: Ghangaria to Shri Hemkund Sahib

Trek Distance: 6 km (One way)

 Trek Duration: 10 hours

 Altitude Gain: 3,049 m

Day 4 switches gears from gentle meadows to a steep, physically challenging pilgrimage trail. Your destination is the sacred Sikh shrine of Hemkund Sahib, sitting beside a serene glacial lake. While the distance is a modest 6 km one way, do not underestimate it. The trail climbs nearly 3,049 feet in a very short span. To keep your mind off the steep switchbacks, the path treats you to views of tumbling waterfalls, snow dusted peaks, hanging glaciers, and patches of the rare, sacred Brahmakamal flower blooming in the cold rocks. Though the altitude gain is significant but as we are returning to Ghangaira on the same day it does not have a major impact.

Day 5: Ghangaria to Joshimath via Govindghat.

Trek Distance: 10 km

Trek Duration: 4 hours

Altitude Loss: 1,312 m

On day 5 you will head back down the valley. You will begin the 10 km descent back to Poolna. Because it is entirely downhill, gravity is on your side, and the walk typically takes just about 4 hours. Once you arrive at the road head near Govindghat, a vehicle will be waiting to drive you back to the comfort of your hotel in Joshimath.

Day 6: Joshimath to Dehradun/Rishikesh

Drive Distance: 255 km

 Drive Duration: 9–10 hours

On your final day, you will board your vehicle after an early breakfast to retrace the scenic mountain highways back down toward the plains. You can expect to arrive back in Rishikesh by roughly 8:00 PM and Dehradun by 9:30 PM.
